Look for general signs of wear on and in the pump; check the hoses and be sure that they appear to be in good shape; and examine the truck’s tank to look for any obvious damage to the outside. Examine all couplings and seals on pumps and hoses, making sure that they are in good condition without any evidence of excessive wear or leaking issues.
• Truck – Finally, after closely examining the pump and its parts and accessories, it is time to inspect the truck itself. Check for obvious problems such as leaks under the hood as well as underneath the body to look for any evident exhaust or axle issues. Be sure the tires are properly inflated. Start the vehicle and test all lights and signals; listen to the engine for any uncommon sound that might indicate a problem.

A very important thing that every vehicle should always carry are all necessary log books, instruction manuals, and daily inspection reports. Although log books are a part of the job that might seem tedious or something that could wait until later to be completed, filling out logs and forms every day is essential. Accurate records provide a good way to keep track of what work was done on a vehicle and more importantly, it is evidence that the truck was properly inspected and/or cleaned when it was put away after the prior day’s work. Rather than having to guess if the tank was washed out, good records will show that it was done and that alone could prevent an accident from happening because different reactive substances were accidentally mixed in the tank.

Once a routine has been established, it shouldn’t take very long to go down a checklist before and after use, then clean and park the truck. The extra time involved is minimal compared to the trouble-free use that can come from catching problems while still small enough to be easily resolved. You might look at the title of this article and think “Health & safety in IT? Why?” And to a certain extend you would be right. There is no heavy machinery, no real chance of falling off anything high and very little chance of actually getting injured. In fact I’m a First Aider in our office full of people and computers and the only things I’ve had to deal with are injuries that people have inflicted on themselves on the way into work. Nothing has actually happened “in” work… yet.

However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t the potential for injury and harm. Here are a few areas that you need to be careful of, even working in IT.

Ergonomics

We’ll start with a biggie! This is fast becoming one of the biggest causes of injury in the work place and can lead to problems with your back, joints, eyesight and in some more extreme cases RSI or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The biggest factor is your work station. According to Health and Safety regulations you should sit upright with your body at 90 degrees to your legs and your knees at a 90 degree angle to the floor and your feet resting firmly on the ground or footrest if you can’t reach. You should sit no more than 16 inches from your keyboard with your eyes in line with the top of your monitor.

Your fingers should be in a relaxed position with your wrists in a relaxed, neutral position with the aid of a wrist support if necessary. And that is just how you sit! There are all sorts of regulations with regard to the chair you sit on, the lighting in the room you work in and even the glare that you get off your monitor. You can find check lists online to help you determine if your workstation is Ergonomic or not.

Lifting and Carrying

This can be quite a big part of IT especially if equipment needs to be moved. Okay so monitors are not quite as big and bulky as they used to be, but some IT equipment can still be heavy all the same. Again, there are a few simple rules that you can follow:

• Avoid bending over to pick things up, always bend at the knees.
• Do not twist at the waist, always turn around.
• Avoid excessive reaching
• Try to avoid carrying out lifting/carrying tasks above shoulder level
• Limit the weight of a load that is lifted and where possible use mechanical aids
• Try not to carrying heavy loads with one hand.

There are others, but these are the main ones.

Ladders

There will be times when you need to be working up ladders as the roof is where most of the cabling goes. You will need to make a decision about which ladders are right for the job and make sure whichever ladders you choose are set up correctly and in the correct position so that you do not have to stretch.
There are other areas to look at, but this is just a taster as to what you need to be looking at even in a nice, safe comfortable IT office.

I recommend that you store your firewood if possible, at least 25 feet away from your home or any structure that you don’t want anything to happen to. Make sure that you stack the firewood as tight as you possibly can, to eliminate possible problems with rodents, reptiles and other animals small enough to make a home inside of your stack of firewood.

If you store any firewood on the ground, and don’t use it within a few years, you can plan on the bottom layer of firewood rotting or suffering from termite infestation. I don’t recommend lying plastic down, because plastic will trap moisture and it would almost be the same as simply laying the firewood on top of your soil.

Remember that stacks of firewood can catch on fire and if you plan on stacking your firewood next to your house for easy access, you should do your best to keep these firewood stacks as small as possible and again, I don’t recommend this. The same rules that apply to home fire safety can easily be applied to firewood storage. Never store flammable materials around your firewood and I don’t recommend storing the firewood near vehicles either.

If you can keep one thing in mind, when thinking about where or how you’re going to store your firewood, just remember that firewood can catch on fire and think accordingly.
